South of Interstate 95,the area known as Tokeneke is an exclusive enclave within the town of Darien. The homes are prized for their privacy and access to the inlets and bays around Long Island Sound. Most of the oldest homes were built as part of the original Tokeneke Park development, which took its name from a Native American sachem who is said to have led a tribe that hunted and fished in the area. An Indian’s silhouette is used to mark the park boundaries.
Prospective Tokeneke Park buyers were invited to stay at Eagle Rock, a colonial-style inn constructed by the development company. The inn, which overlooks picturesque lagoons at the bridge crossing to Contentment Island, has been extensively renovated for use as a private residence. .
More modest Darien properties can be found farther inland, though prices rarely dip much below $1 million.Homes in the Tokeneke area can sell for as much as $7million. Read the rest of this entry »
This article was written several years ago and published in The New York Times Real Estate section . With minor adjustments to number of pupils enrolled in the schools and the median price of a home, this is a very accurate picture of the area. It was also where I lived when I first came to town!
If You’re Thinking of Living In/Noroton and Noroton Heights; A Haven for Both Sailors and Commuters

The Noroton section of Darien is defined by two peninsulas that reach into Long Island Sound. They provide many inlets and coves to create lovely areas for sailors and beachgoers alike. From there Noroton spreads inland across the Boston Post Road, past I95 and into the inland neighborhoods of Noroton Heights.
The shorter of the peninsulas, Noroton Neck, is divided into shore communities like Noroton Bay and Pratt Island, both notable for their multimillion-dollar properties. A new four-bedroom colonial on the Pratt Island waterfront was recently listed at $5.69 million. The peninsula is also home to the world-renowned Noroton Yacht Club, whose former members have included two America’s Cup skippers. The club currently runs the largest junior sailing program in Fairfield County. Read the rest of this entry »
Just a few doors down from Griebs,(which I wrote about in my last post) is a nifty little place called The Sugar Bowl. It is a luncheonette in the old fashioned sense of the word and a favorite stop for young and old alike. The breakfasts are particularly popular. Great eggs, omelets pancakes etc. Young Moms love to bring their broods at lunchtime for grilled cheese or peanut butter and jelly in an atmosphere where kids are not just welcomed, but celebrated.
“How so?” you ask. Well, step into the Sugar Bowl to see some of the craziest decor anywhere. Almost every month, the Sugar Bowl in downtown Darien, decorates its ceiling with dozens items correlating to the season or upcoming holidays. This month is decorated for Valentines Day as you can see.
Service is quick, the food is simple but good and you can sit at a table or at an old fashioned counter with stools.
Just another example of what makes Darien,Ct such a special place to live! If you would like a tour of town,( including the Sugar Bowl),give me a call. 203-554-0951
People often tell me that they are interested in buying a home to Darien,Ct because it is a small town. The population of Darien is about 18,000 and many of the comforts of small town life exist side by side with chain stores and restaurants. A perfect example is Griebs Pharmacy located right on the Post Road in the center of downtown Darien.
Greibs is a pharmacy in the old fashioned sense of the word. The staff knows you by name an never lets anyone wait more than a minute before they ask if you are being helped. If anything ,Griebs is overstaffed. There are always multiple, local residents working behind the counter and all are knowledgeable and pleasant. I don’t think I’ve ever waited more than ten minutes for a prescription to be filled. The pharmacists are extremely knowledgeable and will happily come out from behind the counter to consult.
Griebs will phone your physician if your prescription has run out, takes refill orders promptly over the phone or in person and has from time to time even tussled with an insurance company for me. The greatest service Griebs offers though is HOME DELIVERY. For a nominal charge, Griebs will deliver prescriptions to your front door. The service is invaluable to Darien seniors who can’t get out, young mothers with sick children and just anyone who doesnt have the time to pick up before closing. Griebs is open seven days a week and is truly a small town treasure.
In addition, the store carries a full line of health and beauty aids as well as small gifts.
From the look of it,Planet Pizza, a smallish New England pizza chain will be coming to a prominent Post Road location in Darien. After some research I discovered that Planet Pizza has locations throughout CT and serves up thin crust pizza most unlike Post Corner Pizza,a Darien staple.
I also discovered a website that rates pizza throughout the state and I offer the link here for all of you pizza affiicianados. I’ve eaten at many of these establishments and tend to agree with most of the opinions rendered here. Im a brick oven gal myself. Bon appetit!

Metro North Train Time: You Be the Conductor
Empowering Darien commuters with the information they need to answer the all-important train-catching question: to run or not to run?
For the commuter, a 60-second sprint can make the difference between catching an express train home and enduring a 60-minute wait for the next local loco. Thanks to Metro North Train Time, Darien commuters with access to the web can gauge whether the mad-dash for the train is worth the cardiovascular strain.
“Information is power, and the more information you can give the commuter, the more empowered they feel,” said Chairman of the Commuter Rail Council Jim Cameron. Read the rest of this entry »

Q&A from the Corner Office

Karen Brewer, Realtor at William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty in Darien and founder of interactive website, The Gold Coast Standard.com shared from personal experience how the Information Age has evolved the ways a broker advertises.
Q: How are agents using social media to market themselves and their listings?
Brewer: “I continue to be amazed at the number of agents not using social media or who are using it incorrectly. My own foray into the blogosphere really came about when I decided to discover just what a blog was. I was curious to see what other agents in the area were doing. The answer: very little. There may have been 10 people in the whole state of Connecticut that were attempting to connect with buyers and sellers this way.
“I quickly discovered why. The process is self-selective because the commitment is huge. First you must educate yourself on just what social media is. For example, ‘How does one design a blog?’ ‘What are the capabilities of the technology?’ ‘How often do I blog?’ ‘Am I a good writer?’ ‘How can I measure results and success?’
“Further, some agents are using social media incorrectly. Facebook and Twitter are not just another venue to publish listings. They are unique opportunities to connect with and stay connected to people. I recently heard from someone I went to college with over 30 years ago who is going to be selling their home in Fairfield. I would have never heard from this person if not for an alumni group on Facebook.
“We as realtors have been told over and over that over 80 percent of all home searches begin on the Internet. I think the age of the pretty postcard website is over and Realtors must engage in social media in order to remain relevant. However, there are statistics that suggest that over 75 percent of Realtors who start blogs give up after a year. Of course, the jury is out on whether social networking will yield results. Nevertheless, when the market bounces back and the young, technologically savvy buyers come off the sidelines, I hope to be uniquely positioned to take advantage of it.”
Q: How has the buyer changed?
Brewer: “Buyers, particularly young buyers, have become extremely sophisticated in markets like Westchester and Fairfield counties. They come armed with town statistics, pricing analyses and listings.
“Buyers are no longer looking for trophy homes. The builders who have survived the downturn will be moderating what they build. While quality will always be a hallmark, square footage will decrease. There will be an ongoing preference for open floor plans and state-of-the-art kitchens, but on a more manageable scale.”
