Darien Book Aid Does a World of Good.

My husband is a voracious reader. Two books a week is not an uncommon occurrence. While many Darien residents can be found shopping downtown, sipping latte at Espresso Neat. or utilizing the incredible resources at the Darien Library,we can regularly be found at Barnes and Noble loading up on thrillers and spy novels.(hardcovers only, of course)

As a result, if I turn my head for a minute I can be  knee deep in the aforementioend books. I’ve tried passing them along to office mates,selling them on Amazon and sometimes just  throwing them away.(that doesnt feel good at all). But, they just keep coming back.Over the years I have also brought boxes of books to a place called,DARIEN BOOK AID.Darien Book Aid is located at 1926 Post Road in DarienCT.                                Read the rest of this entry »

Real Estate Taxes in Darien,CT Among the Lowest….

One of the most important things to consider when buying a home here in Darien or elsewhere is the  amount of real estate property taxes you will pay.

Real estate propertry taxes are expressed in something called a mill rate.The mil rate is equivalent to dollars of tax per thousand dollars of assessed value of a home and land. (Assessed value is a lesson for another day).As you’ll see below the rate can vary within a town depending on whether your home is on a septic system or using town sewers. Fireworks 2010,Darien and New Canaan

For years every July 4th, the Town of Darien had one of the best fireworks shows around.They were held on the grounds of the Darien High School and hundreds of families attended the free event. Then budgetary concerns and a new high school building prevented the festivities from continuing.

The next best thing in these parts is to attend the event of our sister town,New Canaan.For Darienites,its a 3-5 mile drive to Waveny Park for one of the best shows in the area. This years event marks the 30th anniversary of the show and will be held on Sunday,July 4th.

But you have to do some planning to get in.Each car requires an entry pass and they must be purchased in advance. The cost to residents is $30/car and non residents is $60/car. Passes can be purchased at the Recreation Dept at Waveny House through July 2 and at the New Canaan Town Hall from 10-2 on July 3.

DARIEN DOINS’- William Pitt Sotheby’s Sponsors Antiques Event Preview

The Darien Historical Society will host the Third Annual Antiques and Garden Elements Show in town this weekend. The show will be held, this Sunday,June 13 at Tilley Pond Park in downtown Darien,CT.The event will feature more than 40 antiques and garden elements dealers from around the Northeast. The sale is being managed by Ferguson & D’Arruda of Providence Rhode Island and will be held,rain or shine in the park.

 General admission is $10 and seniors are $8. A preview party will be held on Friday evening to kick off the event.Sponsors include William Pitt Sothebys,Baywater Properties and the Darien Rowayton Bank among others.The proceeds of the show will benefit the Historical Society in order to preserve materials of local and historical value.If you need more information, call 203-655-9233.

Tilley Pond Park is located on West Ave off the Post Road in Darien,Ct. Take I-95 and  follow the signs off of Exit11 to downtown Darien.

Wholy Cow! Darien Whole Foods Is Here….

I’ve only been to a  Whole Foods market once before.There is one in Greenwich,Ct and the experience was less than enjoyable. The parking lot was impossible to navigate, the aisles were narrow and crowded and  the prices too high.

Well, that was then and this is now.I can honestly say I have never seen a supermarket like thisnew Whole Foods that opened in Darien last week. It  doesn’t do it justice to describe it as a supermarket or just to tell you that they carry every type of fruit and vegetable you’ve ever seen. Attention Whole Foods Shoppers: Big Party in Produce …

As we know Whole Foods is coming up on its Grand Opening next Wednesday,May 19 here in Darien,CT.          

However ,for those of you who  just can’t wait and need a preview  of the wonderful  fruits and veggies coming your way,there is a “sneak peek” party on Monday May 17 from 5PM-8PM. Ill be there! The store is on the site of the former Howard Johnsons on Ledge Road in Darien.

So what does this have to do with Darien real estate?Well nothing.Just another post about the great stuff happening in Darien.
